I side with Colbert, but not because I can't separate the two. I just don't find Cosby funny.

As I got older, George Carlin and Richard Pryor were a lot better. While Lenny Bruce gets a lot of credit for starting 'observational comedy', I always thought Carlin and Pryor were the guys who really got it into the mainstream, and find it odd that Seinfeld mentioned Cosby but not the other two. Regardless, Colbert seemed somewhat taken aback by his answer (as I was) and seemed to get Seinfeld to backtrack and (supposedly) change his mind on Cosby.

I think in the context of the interview topic with Colbert, it would've not made sense to mention Carlin and Pryor. Pryor was a crack addict, sure, but harming yourself vs. date raping virtually countless women are two very separate things. I supposed Jerry could've defended his position by saying that he still also enjoys Roman Polanski films i.e. being able to separate the art from the artist.

Never found Cosby to be that funny. Didn't care for The Cosby Show. Just never appealed to me.

I supposed Jerry could've defended his position by saying that he still also enjoys Roman Polanski films i.e. being able to separate the art from the artist. Oh, it would have made sense, but I suspect that Jerry was actually trying to be PC by mentioning Cosby who, at the time, was much safer than the other two since they followed Bruce's lead by being 'dirty' comics that were liberal users of profanity in their acts. It's worth noting that Jerry doesn't do that, at all, in his act (and may have been the basis for that early Seinfeld episode where he swears at the little kid). The problem was it backfired on him when he said he still liked Cosby to this day. In fact, Jerry could have went the route of citing Carlin instead of Cosby but been more specific, saying in his early days before he made the transition to profanity. The 'clean' early Carlin was still pretty damn funny (more than Cosby) and with a similar observational style. I guess the big difference is that Cosby related personal experiences, whereas early Carlin was more existential. To his credit, Jerry did mention Jackie Mason, too. It's tough when these brilliant, ground-breaking comedians from the sixties end up being flawed in their personal lives.

i always sensed dom irrera was a big influence on jerry's work. Rumor has it that Jerry was so taken with Dom Irrera that he wanted to have his nostrils enlarged, but Dr. Bakersoll refused to touch him.
