It stuck, and he went along with it.

I figured that when Hideki Matsuyama joined the Yankees, his teammates gave him a pet name. They started calling him "Matsu-ey." It stuck, and he went along with it. Japanese people don't use nicknames. Look at Masanori Murakami. You think his Giants teammates called him "Massy" or "Nori"? pizzabagel: I happened to know that, when he would be at a bar after a game, people would say "Hey, Nori. Let me buy you a beer".
