Jerry Seinfeld’s return to Utica and the Stanley Theater on December 6 was a very memorable night on many different fronts.
It was a sold-out show night (which doesn’t happen here often enough), it was his triumphant return (as he had not been here since 2011), and he was on his A-game for the entire night.
From his opening line to his goodbye, Jerry Seinfeld gave his fans exactly what they wanted, a fantastic night of Jerry’s unique brand of humor.
OD reviewer Ron Johns saw things as I did for the most part, and I will tell you Jerry was definitely ‘on’ that night. The fans that I spoke to agreed 110%.
My issue is that for those that weren’t there, they looked to the OD for a review of the night, and they may have been misled by the tone Mr. John’s article. During an ensuing phone conversation, Mr. Johns explained to me his column wasn’t a “review” but more of a personal commentary, to which I say close enough to be perceived as a review.
Here’s where it gets interesting.
It was “funny” how two people heard the same sentence, yet interpreted it completely different.
On one hand, Mr. Johns took Jerry’s greeting about “being in Utica” and how “he ended up...in Utica?!” and interpreted that line as something negative, which was much different from my point of view. I heard an opening introduction that I’m guessing Jerry uses wherever he plays, to engage the crowd right off the bat, with a smile.
It was said in jest, and the audience knows that is how Jerry rolls, to start off his comedy night, and that more of his off-beat, everyday sarcastic humor would follow through his show. Of course, he was feeding off the crowd response and they gave him roars of laughter all night.
All in all, I gave Jerry Seinfeld an A+ for the night, and his love of The Stanley and Utica was evident to me from start to finish.
Let’s hope he books a return show sooner than the seven years we waited for this one.
