Hey, remember Tom Green? His MTV prank show made him really famous for a year or two around the turn of the century, and somehow somebody let this madman make a Hollywood movie called Freddy Got Fingered. Most critics said it was one of the worst movies ever made, and that it took bad taste to whole new level. I was a 15-year-old Tom Green fan when it came out, and couldn't wait to see it. I ended up finding it more disturbing than funny. I was familiar with the gross out comedies that were popular at the time, but this was different. Freddy Got Fingered went far beyond the likes of the Farrelly Brothers or Adam Sandler. Jacking off animals, licking exposed broken leg bones, swinging a newborn baby around by the umbilical cord, and a running gag with a little kid who gets horrifyingly injured every time he makes an appearance. It was almost scary.
On a recent rewatch, I have come to the conclusion that Freddy Got Fingered is a misunderstood masterpiece. Tom Green just came around at the perfect time and somebody actually gave him the money to make a real Hollywood movie, and he used it to basically give Hollywood a big middle finger. A considerable amount of the movies humor comes from the fact that such a whacked out subversive film actually got released in major theaters with Hollywood money. The movie is pure anarchy. I think it is something that really needs to be re-examined by its detractors. One thing is for sure, love it or hate it, you will never forget it.
