"Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" - Michael Jackson Mamasay mamasa mamakusa Oh, wait, that is the lyric... What the hell does that mean...? I thought it was "Mama say, mama sah, M-Michael sah," some kind of homage to The King of Pop.

"Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" - Michael Jackson Mamasay mamasa mamakusa Oh, wait, that is the lyric... What the hell does that mean...? That's essentially the argument that fans of mumble rap have, that hip hop lyrics don't have to make sense. You can make sounds that act as a rhythm, which MJ did a lot. I always think sure, but do the beats and "rhythms" have to be so crappy? I mean, a 90's group called DAS Efx used gibberish but it had a certain degree of art to it. Plus the beats had mad flava, B.

Elizabeth Fraser of Cocteau Twins is another (non-rap) example. She made the singing of nonsense "lyrics" a high art.

I kind of like that song. Here's a master of "mumble" rap (jump to 1:24 for the incomprehensible lyrics) - ODB, the Screamin' Jay Hawkins of hip hop:

This Dirty Bastard went to market This Dirty Bastard stayed home This Dirty Bastard had roast beef This Dirty Bastard had none And this Dirty Bastard made wee-wee in the parking garage.
